Jim Maloney, MPP

Jim holds a Master of Public Policy (MPP) from the University of California at Berkeley, and B.A. degrees in Economics and Political Science, with a specialty in International Relations, from the University of California at Santa Barbara. He spent a year studying abroad at the University of Goettingen in Germany. After his undergraduate work Jim embarked on a career in international transportation, working in business development and management for the ocean shipping carrier, Maersk Line, and the air carrier, DHL Worldwide Express. Jim held various executive positions with these companies. His work took him to New York, Tampa, Miami and San Francisco.

Jim served as a member of the board of directors of the International Trade Council of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. He was selected by the International Who’s Who of Professional Management for professional achievement in March 2002.

While in Tampa, Jim helped found the Human Rights Task Force, an organization dedicated to fighting for LGBT rights at the local level, which has since evolved into Equality Florida. With his partner of 17 years, Andrew Nance, he co-founded in 1992 the Tampa Bay Frontrunners, a gay and lesbian athletic and social club. In 2003, he co-chaired the annual awards banquet for Equality California, the statewide LGBT civil rights organization, in San Francisco. Following his passion for LGBT civil rights issues, Jim left the business world in 2003 to enroll in the master program at the Goldman School of Public Policy at UC Berkeley. During his tenure there he became director of the Military Education Initiative (MEI) in May 2004.

Jim comes from a military family. His parents met when his father was a second lieutenant in the Air Force and his mother was a nurse and first lieutenant. Two brothers, a sister-in-law, and two brothers-in-law have also served in uniform. Jim feels "the time is right to acknowledge the contributions of LGBT service members and to build coalitions with veterans and other groups to end restrictions on gays and lesbians patriotically serving our country."
Jim is a native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and lives in San Francisco with his partner Andrew.
