Denny Meyer
MEA Director
Born
to Holocaust refugees at the close of WWII, Denny began
a lifetime of activism at the age of 13 when he joined
a NAACP picket line in 1960. Since then he has battled
for Gay rights, Women’s rights, Transgender rights,
and LGBT veterans’ rights. During the Vietnam
Era he left college and volunteered to serve his country,
joining the Navy. Later, in a career as a USAR civilian/military
administrator, he rose to Sergeant First Class. As Gay
rights began to blossom, he left the service after 10
years rather than reenlist yet again, in order to live
his life freely as a gay man. After AIDS took the life
of his love of 20 years, he joined the movement to achieve
equality in our armed forces. He founded the NY Chapter
of American Veterans for Equal Rights. In 2004, as he
battled cancer, Denny and his chapter officers organized
a grassroots 15-month effort which resulted in the passage
of the nation's first "Don't Ask Don't Tell"
repeal resolution by the New York City Council. This
led to a nationwide movement of similar resolutions
by cities, organizations, and the State of California.
Disabled and working via the internet, Denny currently
serves as the AVER Public Affairs and Veterans Affairs
Officer, as a Military Community Services Network (MCSN)
regional coordinator, and coordinates communications
planning for Military Equality Alliance (MEA).
