Paul Dodd
Chaplain
(Colonel) Paul Dodd retired from the United States Army
in June 1998, after having served 21 years on active
duty, and 10 years in the Army Reserve and National
Guard. He is a graduate of the Chaplain Officer Basic
and Advance Courses, the Combined Arms and Services
Staff School (CAS3), Command and General Staff College,
and the Residency in Clinical Pastoral Education at
Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He was selected for
the resident course at the War College, but declined
attendance. Chaplain Dodd’s civilian education
includes the Bachelor of Arts from Ouachita Baptist
University, the Master of Divinity and Master of Education
from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and
the Doctor of Ministry in Pastoral Counseling and Psychotherapy
from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. His doctoral
dissertation is titled, “The Effects of Spiritual
Resources on Quality of Life Issues for HIV/AIDS Beneficiaries
in the Military.”
Chaplain Dodd’s military assignments included
serving as Division Support Command Chaplain with the
101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Staff Chaplain
at Camp Page and the Area II Support Activity in Chun
Cheon, South Korea, Deputy Post Chaplain at Fort Myer,
Virginia, Hospital Chaplain at the 130th Station Hospital
in Heidelberg, Germany, Deputy Chief of the Department
of Ministry and Pastoral Care at Walter Reed Army Medical
Center, Chief of the Department of Ministry and Pastoral
Care at Brooke Army Medical Center, and Command Chaplain
of the United States Army Medical Command.
His awards include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious
Service Medal with Five Oak Leaf Clusters, the Army
Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Achievement
Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed
Forces Reserve Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, and the
Army Superior Unit Award. He was also awarded the prestigious
Order of Military Medical Merit.
Prior to entering active duty in 1977, Chaplain Dodd
was the pastor of the First Baptist Church in Tyronza,
Arkansas, and the West Helena Baptist Church in West
Helena, Arkansas. He has held numerous regional and
denominational positions, most recently serving as Vice-Chair
of the Moderator’s Nominating Committee of the
Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches
(UFMCC). He is actively involved with Soulforce, a national
organization committed to ending the spiritual violence
and untruths perpetrated against gays and lesbians by
churches and other religious organizations.
Chaplain Dodd is the father of two daughters and the
grandfather of two grandchildren. He currently resides
in Austin, Texas where he is in private practice as
a Pastoral Counselor and Psychotherapist. He is a Fellow
in the American Association of Pastoral Counselors,
and a Professional Member of the American Counseling
Association.
