Monica F. Helms
Monica F. Helms has been an activist for over eight
years and began in Arizona in 1998, where she helped
start It’s Time, Arizona. She moved to Georgia
in 2000, and in 2001, became the Executive Director
of Trans=Action, Georgia’s transgender advocacy
organization. Even though she resigned from that position
in January 2006, she is still active with local transgender
issues.
On the National level, Monica served on the Board of
the National Transgender Advocacy Coalition (NTAC) for
18 months before starting the Transgender American Veterans
Association (TAVA.) She is also on the Advisory Boards
of the National Center for Transgender Equality (NTCE)
and the Military Equality Alliance (MEA.) In 2004, Monica
became the first transgender delegate elected from any
southern state to the Democratic National Convention.
She also is an accomplished writer and had a regular
column in Transgender Tapestry for the five years. Monica
was a recipient of the Trinity Award in 2003, the transgender
community’s second highest award.
